Rock Haven fest 2026
July 6, 2026
The countdown begins!
On Saturday, August 22, we’ll be celebrating four years of Rock Haven with a community competition! What’s a community comp?
Picture the gym being re-set with all new boulders, ranging from beginner level to super challenging expert level climbs. Everyone is welcome to compete, and we provide a handy chart on our Rock Haven Fest page to help you decide in which category to sign up.
Before and after climbing, or if you choose to spectate instead, you can visit with really cool vendors who will have tables at the event. Check out some outdoor gear, learn about non profit organizations in our area and generally make the rounds. (hint: you also get raffle tickets at each table!)
Lastly, stick around for the Finals Round at 7:00pm, it is really something awesome to watch. The top climbers from each Open category will vie for prizes on some really hard boulders. Grab a beverage and get ready to cheer on these climbers.
Mark your calendars!
So let’s see you on the walls. Don’t be a stranger – come climb with us, and stay a while!
WHY rock haven?
June 29, 2026
Summer is hitting its stride and July 4 is almost here!
It seems like everyone is in the midst of travel, visits with friends, and long days when you can get a lot done because it’s light out. For the most part, our PNW weather allows for a ton of outdoor activities, too.
So why climb at Rock Haven or any other indoor bouldering gym?
The reasons are many, but three stand out-
- Community. Our staff are the same welcoming and friendly people who remember your name. Our Rock Haven members like you are the same people who cheer on your sends and puzzle through the tough moves alongside you.
- Consistency. Whatever you are doing this summer, getting in your workouts and climbing sessions each week is what keeps you feeling strong and ready for your next adventure. Physical activity and a routine are soothing and can even help you sleep, just when things are feeling hectic and your scheduled is packed.
- Climbs. You may get in a vacation or two (or more? lucky!) but the routesetting team at Rock Haven just keeps the good climbs coming your way. Setting is weekly – we’re keeping it fresh for you!
So let’s see you on the walls. Don’t be a stranger – come climb with us, and stay a while!
Staycation this summer!
June 22, 2026
Let’s be honest, summer is fun and so is travel, but sometimes it gets hectic, not to mention expensive!
This is when it can feel good to slow down and take a few days to enjoy a staycation, and explore sights and activities right where you live. If you’re feeling up to an outdoor adventure, check out hiking trails near you. There are many parks with trails in and around Gresham.
If it’s blazing hot or you’re otherwise looking for an indoor activity for the day, Rock Haven has a special for you! This amazing deal is called the Family Adventure Day Pass, and for just $49, up to 2 adults and 5 kids can have an awesome climbing session. Non-climbers are welcome to check in with a waiver at no cost, to spend time with the group and spectate.
For the purposes of this pass, your group does not have to be just one family, so feel free to bring friends, extended family, neighbors, and your kids’ friends.. After all, climbing is a very social sport!
Our gym has plenty of seating, so feel free to bring snacks and water, or purchase snacks at the front desk to enjoy.
The Family Adventure Day Pass can be reserved online, or you can just walk in and purchase this pass on the day of your visit. To get this deal, simply enter the gym between 9am and 12pm any weekday (Mon-Fri) (until 9/4/26). Note that the pass ends at 3pm (or when you leave, if earlier than 3pm). Climbing, being on pads or slide is for ages 3+. See gym for additional terms and conditions.

here's to all the climbing dads!
June 15, 2026
There are a ton of things we love about the sport of rock climbing, and one that comes to mind is the fact that people of all ages can enjoy the sport together, creating the opportunity for quality family time. This week let’s give a shout out to dads who climb, and to all the dads who support their youth climbers in the gym and outside.
It’s well known that a climbing gym is a special kind of third place – a place to unplug, be physically active and challenge yourself on plastic climbing holds and plywood volumes. It’s a very social activity which is why a lot of families gravitate to climbing.
Sometimes it’s parents who introduce their kids to climbing from a young age, and other times parents are drawn in to trying the sport after their kids get into it. Either way, it’s a great way to spend a couple of hours being active and away from screens, together.
For other families, one or more kids or teens have found their passion in the sport. For all the dads driving their kids to the gym for practice or a session with friends, to local competitions and those farther afield, remember that the time spent supporting your youth climber is huge.
At Rock Haven, your little adventurers are welcome to climb as early as age three, so if you’ve haven’t been, come by to check us out! If you’re looking for some summer specials for individuals and families, check out these Deals that are available this summer.
And however you are involved as a climbing family, Happy Father’s Day to all the dads reading!

wrapping up youth comp season
June 8, 2026
As the school year winds down, the youth competitive climbing season also approaches an end, with Youth National Championships happening June 25 – July 3, 2026 in Salt Lake City, UT. Athletes compete in Boulder, Lead/Toprope (TR) and Speed climbing. Top competitors from Nationals move on to World Climbing Youth Championships in Arco, Italy.
At Rock Haven, we have a Climbing Team with two distinct levels – the Development Team, with less intense practice sessions and shorter practice times, and the Competitive Team, members of which have longer practices and more intense drills. Most new athletes ages 8-12 will first join the Development Team, though it is open to climbers ages 8-17. Athletes who have already spent time on Dev Team or are coming from another youth team may qualify right away for Competitive Team.
Our general philosophy around youth climbing is to let athletes take the lead on how intensively they want to practice and how they want to be involved in the sport. At the same time, we strongly encourage athletes on the Competitive Team to compete in local USA Climbing sanctioned events, as well as other community competitions at our gym and at other local gyms.
Climbing competitions are a way for climbers to challenge themselves, to experience the routesetting and overall environment of other gyms, and to meet other youth competitors and their families and supporters. There is a special energy at youth competitions, as athletes give it their all and vie for a spot on the podium. At the same time athletes find a supportive environment, as spectators cheer for and encourage all athletes, regardless of which team they represent.
Several team members on the Rock Haven Comp Team have competed locally each season, and as we grow the team we hope to see more who take this route. One member of the youth team has made it as far as the Divisional level, and we know that as our competitors continue to practice hard and grow as athletes, it won’t be long before we see multiple athletes at the higher level events including Nationals.
In August we will be hosting a “training camp and trial days” for new and returning youth climbers. The event is two afternoons, usually a Tues & Thurs in the late afternoon. There is plenty of time at the end of the second day for Q & A and for families to meet coaches. Both teams officially start practice the week of Labor Day.
This coming fall, the Development Team will be open to accepting new and returning climbers. For the sake of seeing improvement and getting something out of team practices, we ask that families commit to a minimum of three months of team participation. New team members will be accepted based on whether we have spots available at the time they want to sign up.
The Competitive Team will be slightly more formal, so that signups happen by season – Fall, Winter and Spring, with an athlete committing to attending all practices in a given season. This allows us to schedule coaching staff appropriately and for athletes to build good routines and increase performance.
If you have a young climber who is interested in competitive climbing, our Head Coach, Ben, is always happy to talk about how to get started and what to expect. At the youth level, one of the best ways to get started is to simply climb often, i.e. two to three times per week. A second recommendation is to buy your athlete their own shoes. To start out, they do not need much more than this. Pair that with our Summer Pass, and your young climber will be ready to join the team this coming fall!
So don’t be a stranger – come climb with us, and stay a while!
To Graduates and new beginnings
June 1, 2026
It’s hard to believe that it’s already June, in some ways it feels like we just celebrated the New Year and the start to 2026.
With June comes a time to celebrate, especially the many young people graduating high school or college, or moving up from elementary or middle school to the next grade and a new school. For others, they’re taking that next step and looking forward to a job and a new start in the workplace.
We’d like to take a moment to congratulate any Rock Haven community members who are graduating from school this month.
Similar to facing a difficult new boulder problem, these milestones represent ongoing persistence, hard work, and the courage to face challenges head-on. As they move on to their next adventure, we encourage them to remember that achievement is rarely a solo endeavor; it is supported by the community around you. Whether navigating a new campus or a new career, we hope they carry the spirit of resilience and connection they’ve built within our walls into every new venture.
This summer, don’t be a stranger – come climb with us, and stay a while!
Community at rock haven
May 25, 2026
Put down those screens and find some community at Rock Haven!
Rock Haven Climbing means a lot of things to different people – fun and thought-provoking climbs, a weight room with all the equipment you need for a great workout, a full-size ping pong table and drinks on tap for taking a well-deserved break after your session. On top of all these great features, something we tend to all circle back to when we think of Rock Haven is community.
Life moves fast and these days it is also increasingly digital and on screen. As much as we embrace technology, something we can all agree on is that life should not be lived through scrolling mindless videos or consuming AI slop. To thrive in our current digital environment, we need to make time to slow down, do things in real life, use our body and our mind, and find connections to actual people. One of the best places to do this is, you guessed it, the climbing gym!
Before we make this blog post entirely about climbing at Rock Haven, we’d like to add that getting out in nature is also at the top of the list for ways to keep your body healthy and your mind clear. Make time for that hike or camping trip. Climb outside. If you haven’t climbed outside and want to get started, check out Kaf Adventures, our local PNW guide partner, to schedule a trip.
If you’re just getting started or new to Rock Haven, we have a lot of events that can help you find the community you are looking for. Coming up this week we have a Member Appreciation Night on Thursday evening, complete with some challenge climbs and a mystery scavenger hunt. Member Appreciation nights come with unlimited Guest Passes for members, so bring a crowd! Rumor has it that we might even start a leaderboard to see who brings the most guests in one night..
On Friday we celebrate our Summer Kickoff, an event co-sponsored by the City of Gresham. Enjoy discounted admission to climb, pizza and drinks for $1 each, and let’s kick off summer together!
Finally, did you know we host a monthly Board Game Night at Rock Haven? We sure do – so stop by on the second Friday of the month to play some old favorites or learn a new game. We have plenty, or bring your own board game as long as you’re willing to teach everyone how to play.
So don’t be a stranger – come climb with us, and stay a while!

Crushing Grades Beyond Our Walls: Rally in the Valley & the NW Boulder Pass
We all love Rock Haven, and appreciate the huge space, fresh and creative boulders every week, and third space to hang out in and be a part of the awesome local climbing community. But sometimes we all need to break out of our groove and out of our comfort zone and explore more of the awesome climbing scene right here in the PNW!
This week we’d like to highlight a specific community event that’s happening at one of our Partner Gyms – Rally in the Valley at Valley Rock Gym in Corvallis.
RITV, VRG’s annual community comp in Corvallis, is happening this coming Saturday, May 16th. The friendly competition uses a modified redpoint format for all abilities, culminating in an onsight finals in the evening.
The schedule for the day includes
- Two qualifying sessions at 9:00am and 12:30pm
- Raffle and awards at 4:30pm
- Onsight finals at 6:00pm
It’s open to climbers in Youth, Recreational (V0-V3), Intermediate (V4-V6), Open (V7+), and Masters (40+) divisions, with Men’s, Women’s, and Non-Binary gender categories.
Can’t make the event on Saturday? Drop in at one of the NWBP gyms any time.
It’s one of the coolest perks of being a Rock Haven member: access to a network of independent bouldering gyms across NW Oregon. The vision behind the Pass is simple: encourage you to check out other area bouldering gyms, make new friends, and become a part of the greater climbing community. This whole movement is all about promoting the sport and supporting the regional climbing community.
Think of it as your passport to new sends and new vibes. Visiting another gym exposes you to completely different routesetting styles and holds, which can force you to adapt your technique and crush plateaus you didn’t even know you had. Plus, every gym has its own unique community energy, and meeting other climbers is what makes this sport truly great!
The Details You Need to Know:
The Pass grants eligible members (like our EFT, Annual, and Summer Pass holders) one free day pass to each of the partner gyms every single month.
- The pass is for a free day pass only—no extras like rentals or classes are included.
- You need to present a photo ID and proof of current membership (like a payment receipt for the month/year).
- These passes expire at the end of the month if unused, so plan your road trips!
Ready to branch out? Grab your shoes, check out the NW Boulder Pass website, and go get your climb on!
climbing family style
May 4, 2026
At Rock Haven we care about celebrating community and personal connections, which are so important to health and well being.
We’re thinking of the families we celebrate as well, especially with Mother’s Day just around the corner.
One of the best things about rock climbing, indoors and outside, is the fact that families can get involved in the sport and climb together. People of all ages and skill levels can climb side by side which is not something that is true of all sports. It is such an awesome way to stay connected as a family, and create those core memories together.
At Rock Haven, we can start kids climbing as young as age 3, and we love to say, there is no upper age limit! Our family area is huge and was designed especially for families – parents, older siblings, and the youngest climbers – to enjoy the space together. It is definitely not a “kid zone”!
At one end of our Shipwreck boulder, the walls are basically gentle, rounded slopes with fun shapes like trucks and farm animals. As you make your way toward the other end, the boulder tapers into a mini prow with problems that are a true challenge to the grownups. And don’t forget the corner terrain with playhouses and slides!
Want to take Mom climbing and make some memories this week? Get a Rock Haven gift card online or in the gym, or just swing by and get day passes on Mother’s day. A Punch Pass or Summer Pass are really cool gift ideas too.. she doesn’t really need another candle anyway!
Local partners update
April 27, 2026
We continue to celebrate our partnerships with local businesses, new and old. Here we’d like to highlight two of our partners.
We’ll take a moment to emphasize how important it is to shop at locally owned businesses, because they are an important resource for our community in many ways. A locally owned business has an owner or owners who care about selling the best products and services, and they are there to respond if you have a concern or problem.
Most small businesses are started by people with expertise in a certain area, and they’re willing to go the extra mile to get you what you need and make sure what you’re buying is the right item. You won’t find that level of service or caring on Amazon or other websites.
We encourage you to remember this and make sure we help local companies stay in business by shopping with them.
As of April, we are increasing our collaboration with Mountain Shop, a fantastic outdoor gear store, locally owned and operated. They are located at 1205 NE 33rd Ave in Portland. Show proof of your Rock Haven membership and get 10% off gear! They have an amazing selection of climbing shoes and other outdoor gear so check them out today.
We’ve collaborated with Kaf Adventures since 2023 to offer outdoor guided trips, and as of 2026 Kaf is generously offering discounts on specific trips for members of Rock Haven Climbing. Whether you’re looking for a climbing, mountaineering, backpacking or other adventure local to the PNW, or looking to venture out internationally, Kaf is your outdoor guide!
Climb-a-thon weekend
April 20, 2026
We just celebrated an amazing weekend of running and climbing. First, Rock Haven team members joined in the fun with a table at the Gresham Lilac Run.
Our prize wheel went over swimmingly (or is that “spinningly”?), as everyone who took a spin got to first do three exercises, along the lines of arm circles, toe touches and jumping jacks, before selecting a fun prize!
On Sunday, we welcomed members, guests and runners to the Climb-a-thon. It was a blast! Climbers did their best to tally up as many sends as possible – and here we want to do a shout out to routesetters for making that happen with 120 super fun boulders.
Next Adventure, Kaf Adventures & Mountain Shop visited with vendor tables, information about their stores and trip offerings, and brought a bunch of raffle prizes. We rounded out the day with handing out the winnings and with yummy burritos from Wood Village Burrito Shop.
Next up in Member Events, Member Appreciation & Wellness Night on 4/30, sign up today and invite your friends, too!
Lilac climb-a-thon
April 13, 2026: Climb-a-Thon FAQ
How much climbing experience do I need?
None! Most of the boulders being set for this event will be beginner and intermediate friendly. You’re aiming to climb as many boulders as you can within your ability, not to climb the hardest boulders.
Are there categories?
There are no categories, folks of all experience levels will climb alongside one another!
How are you keeping score?
Each climber will get a scorecard that has sections for each color within our rainbow grading system. All climbs are worth the same number of points, so there is no incentive to only climb the hard stuff. All you have to do is tally up the number of climbs you do for each color, turn in your scorecard, and we’ll announce the winners!
How many routes will there be?
There will be over 100 total climbs, with at least 80 of those being beginner to intermediate friendly. We’ll be adding climbs throughout the week leading up to the Climb-a-Thon to bump up the usual setting density so there’s something for everyone.
How hard are the climbs going to be?
There will be a range of climbs from VB all the way up to V10. Most climbs will fall into the beginner to intermediate range of V0-V6 in an effort to make things accessible to a range of skill levels.
How much does it cost?
If you’re a Rock Haven member, it’s just $10. If you participate in the Gresham Lilac Run and show up with your race bib, it’s FREE! Non members pay a regular day pass rate of $23.
What if I’m part of the NW Boulder Pass?
If you are a member at a NW Boulder Pass partner gym (Valley Rock Gym, the Rock Boxx, or Tomo), expect VIP treatment (aka member pricing).

April 6, 2026: Upcoming Events You Won’t Want to Miss!

Lilac Weekend Climb-a-thon – Sunday, April 19
We’re thrilled to partner with the City of Gresham Lilac Run for our second annual Lilac Weekend Climb-a-thon!
Think of it as part community competition, part climbing marathon. Instead of climbing for difficulty, you’ll climb for volume—how many climbs you can complete in three hours.
- Who can participate? Everyone! We’ll have climbs for beginners through advanced climbers.
- How it works: Grab your scorecard, start climbing, and tally your completed climbs.
- Extras: Enjoy a raffle, local partner and vendor tables, and delicious food.
Check out our Events Page to register and secure your spot!
